As part of its commitment to promoting dignity, health, and inclusion for vulnerable populations, the Centre for Development, Health and Rights on August 9, 2025, reached out to Internally Displaced Persons in Makurdi, Benue State, with dignity packs and health education.
This intervention comes in the wake of the tragic June attack on the Yelewata community in Guma Local Government Area, where hundreds of lives were lost to militia violence.
Many survivors remain displaced, with the Makurdi camp now hosting over 5,000 people, with most of them being women.
CEDHAR, an organization dedicated to the growth and development of vulnerable communities, seized the opportunity to not only meet urgent needs but also to reassure displaced families that they are not forgotten.
Speaking during the outreach, CEDHAR’s Executive Director, Mr. Moses Omidiora, explained that the initiative was designed to meet immediate needs while affirming the inherent worth and rights of the displaced.
“These are not acts of charity but fulfilment of your basic rights. CEDHAR would continue to advocate for the rights of vulnerable communities, particularly women and girls, at both community and policy levels,” he emphasized.
He further noted that while displacement imposes a heavy emotional and physical toll, the courage and resilience of the IDPs remain inspiring.
The dignity packs distributed included sanitary pads, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and wrappers.
The items were carefully chosen to meet urgent hygiene needs and help residents maintain their dignity.
Medical professionals and counselors also led sessions on hygiene, disease prevention, personal care, and emotional resilience.
The health talks emphasized coping strategies, self-care, and the importance of community solidarity in times of displacement.
Some of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the support, highlighting how much the gesture meant to their daily lives.
The outreach was made possible through the collaboration of community leaders, volunteers, and partners, reflecting a shared commitment to restoring dignity and strengthening hope among displaced families in Benue.
